The world of boxing will receive a welcome shot in the arm on Saturday night as the much-anticipated re-match between Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler takes centre stage at the O2 Area in London (Sky Sports Box Office, 11pm). Kessler came out on top when the pair met in 2010 but it is Froch who is odds on favourite for this weekend’s Super Middleweight world title unification fight.  The bout promises to be a hugely entertaining encounter and it is a real boost for boxing after the recent circus surrounding the likes of Audley Harrison and Dave Haye. This bout between two of the best 168 pound boxers in the world is a tonic for world boxing and it is Froch who is currently 1/2 favourite with Ladbrokes, while Kessler is 7/4 and the draw is 22/1.  There is genuine respect between these two boxers rather than the embarrassing tit-for-tat comments that have plagued recent high profile fights in the sport. The pair are evenly match and it was Kessler who came out on top when they met in Denmark three years ago, with the Dane deservedly enjoying the benefit of a unanimous points decision (116-112, 115-113, 117-111).  Englishman Froch will enjoy the backing of a partisan 18,000 strong crowd at the O2 Arena this weekend though and it is fair to say that the British star has matured since his Super Six defeat to Kessler. Froch has won four and lost one of his five bouts since his last meeting with Kessler as he won, lost and then won back his IBF belt.

Froch won back his IBF title with a very impressive fifth round stoppage of Lucian Bute last year, although this Saturday’s fight is 8/13 odds on to go the distance. Froch now boasts a 30-2 win-loss career record and 22 of those came courtesy of knockouts, although again the bout with Kessler is anticipated to be an epic, with Ladbrokes bookmakers going 13/5 for the fight to be decided between the seventh and twelfth round, while they go 9/2 for it to be decided between the ninth and twelfth round.  Kessler, the WBA belt holder, goes into the fight having won all three of his fights since he beat Froch and his career record now reads won 46, lost two, including 35 knockouts. The two-time WBA and two-time WBC super middleweight champion is an impressive specimen and the 34-year-old has been preparing for this fight by sparring with the unbeaten Nathan Cleverly and George Groves.  However, since beating Froch, the quality of Kessler’s three opponents hasn’t been particularly impressive and Kessler has suffered with a couple of injuries that have hindered him considerably. Froch could be that little bit sharper this weekend and the Nottingham fighter will look to make the extra inch advantage he enjoys in terms of reach over Kessler count, with Ladbrokes going 2/1 for Froch to win by a unanimous points decision in what promises to be an absolute classic on Saturday night.
