The 2013 British Open will commence today at Muirfield, as the world’s best golfers chase one of the most prestigious titles the sport has to offer. Heading into the Open, there are a number of intriguing story lines to keep an eye on, such as Tiger Woods‘ continued chase for his elusive 15th major, as well as Adam Scott’s quest for redemption after his late meltdown at the British a year ago. So far this year, both the Masters and the U.S. Open were captured by first-time major winners, so this year’s Open Championship could be won by anyone. There have been 16 major championships since Woods’ last win. While there is little doubt his major-less drought has to be weighing heavily on his mind entering play today, he remains calm and collected when speaking with reporters (via USA Today):
“I feel very good about my game. I felt very, very good going into major championships. I’ve had a pretty good year this year so far; won four times. Even though I haven’t won a major championship in five years, I’ve been there in a bunch of them where I’ve had chances. I just need to keep putting myself there and eventually I’ll get some.”
Tiger will be seeking his fourth career Claret Jug on a course that has caused nightmares for Woods in the past. The Muirfield Golf Club was the course where Tiger shot an 81 back in 2002, his worst score as a member of the professional tour (h/t NY Daily News).
Coming off a strained elbow injury that he suffered at the US Open last month, the Vegas favorite to win will have to overcome more than just painful memories of the course to emerge victorious.
Woods will be teeing off at 2:45 local time (9:45 am ET), and will be playing alongside Graeme McDowell and Louis Oosthuizen, who won the British Open in 2010 at St Andrews.
