Q: What time is the race?
A: The 2013 Melbourne Cup is run at 3:00pm AEDT.
Track conditions: Track conditions will be updated closer to the race. In 2012, the Flemington track was rated a Good 3 with Penetrometer: 4.78 (Updated: 11:10am) – with an overcast day with little rain in the lead-up.
In recent years the Australian horseracing industry has attracted criticism due to the lack of quality staying horses that have competed in the Cup and the 2012 Melbourne Cup was no different. Just two Australian-bred horses took part in the cup: Ethiopia and Niwot.
French-trained duo Dunaden and Americain, who won the race in 2011 and 2010 respectively, head the betting and look set for strong showings again, with Dunaden storming home to win the Caulfield Cup on October 20 and Americain finishing fourth.
The ‘Cups King’ Bart Cummings has tasted victory in the Melbourne Cup on 12 occasions and will enter Precedence, who finished seventh in last year’s event, and German horse Sanagas in this year’s 2012 Melbourne Cup field.
Other Australian-trained hopes include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Glencadam Gold and Green Moon, prepared by Victorian trainer Robert Hickmott.
The final field was completed after Kelinni’s victory in the Lexus Stakes on Derby Day and after Saturday night’s barrier draw, (the barrier saw connections select their horse’s barrier from miniature Melbourne Cups after their horse’s saddlecloth number was drawn from a barrel).
